Barcelona confident Ter Stegen will renew

 

Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be a Barcelona player until 2025. The club are, despite his renewal not yet being signed, confident that an agreement will be reached to keep the goalkeeper at the Camp Nou.Barcelona have been negotiating with the player's representatives and talks had been ongoing ahead of the transfer market's closure on October 5.

Discussions had started a long time ago, but the outbreak of COVID-19 and its subsequent impact on European football saw talks put on hold, though they did pick up again at the beginning of the summer. Ter Stegen's wage demands have posed some difficulties for the Catalans, but the club believe that they have found a way to tie him down to an extension that will see him continue to be an important part of the team at the Camp Nou.

The German has asked for 18 million euros net per season, and the two parties have been looking for a payment formula in order to meet the player's demands.Barcelona have asked their players to reduce their salaries for the 2020/21 season due to the reduced budget, partly because of the coronavirus.

The current plan is that Ter Stegen won't receive that full amount in the first years of his new contract, though that money would be compensated in the following seasons. Barcelona are sure that the goalkeeper will keep playing an important part of their squad for years to come, making them more willing to meet his salary expectations in some way.

The 28-year-old's current deal in Catalonia ends on June 30, 2022. He has made 236 appearances for the club since arriving from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014.
